What is lip augmentation?

Lip augmentation creates fuller, plumper lips and can reduce fine wrinkles around the lips. Fillers may be injected into the lips for increase volume. These include collagen (Zyderm, Zyplast, Cosmoderm, Cosmoplast), hylauronic acid products (Juvaderm, Restylane, Hylaform, Captique) or autologous fat. In addition, there are implantable products such as Allodium (cadaver dermis) or autologous dermis that can be surgically placed in the lips to increase volume.

Other alternatives to natural products are the use of synthetic products such as Gore-tex to increase lip volume. Dr. Mezrow’s preference is to use natural products. Synthetic products may create a foreign body reaction, get infected or extrude, necessitating removal.
